Childhood & Early Life

Ronda Rousey was conceived in Riverside, California on February 1, 1987. AnnMaria De Mars, her mother, was an accomplished judoka.

She was also the first U.S. citizen to win a “World Judo Championship.” Her father, Ron Rousey, was a soldier. Rousey is of English and Trinidadian ancestry.

The family was struck by tragedy when their father, who had been injured in a sledding accident suffered severe injuries and was told he would become a paraplegic.

He committed suicide because he was unable to bear the weight of his disability. Ronda was eight years old when he died. This incident deeply affected her. Her mother later married an aeronautical engineer.

Ronda was struggling in school and had trouble focusing on her studies. In order to vent her frustrations, her mother convinced her to try judo. Ronda was taught judo by her mother, who became her first coach.

At the age of 15, she was included in the United States Olympic Team. At 16 she dropped out of high school and received a G.E.D. At 17 years old, she was able to qualify for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. She became the youngest judoka at the whole ‘Olympic Games.

She also won the bronze medal at the Junior World Championships that year, becoming the first American judoka to win two Junior World medals.

2007 saw a new level in her performance as a Judoka. She was ranked in the top three in the world for 70 kg, and she also won gold at the 2007 Pan American Games.

In the same year, she took home the silver medal at the 2007 World Judo Championships in the middleweight division.

She was a participant in Beijing’s 2008 Olympic Games. Although she lost in the quarterfinals to Edith Bosch she won a bronze medal. She qualified for another match using the repechage bracket. 

She became the first American woman to win an Olympic medal for women’s judo in 1992 when it was introduced as an Olympic sport.

After the 2008 Olympics, she decided to retire from judo. She was uncertain of her future and worked as a bartender after her retirement.

In March 2011, she made her professional mixed martial art debut at King of the Cage: Turning Point, where she defeated Ediane Games by way of an armbar submission.
