Ohio Valley Wrestling (2000–2002)
When Lesnar joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 2000, he was sent to the organization’s developmental league, Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), where he met Paul Heyman, who would later become his manager and friend.
OVW booker Jim Cornette partnered Lesnar with Shelton Benjamin, an old college classmate. They were referred to as The Minnesota Stretching Crew, and they triumphed three times as the OVW Southern Tag Team Champions.
Before being promoted to the WWF’s main roster in 2001 and 2002, Lesnar competed in a number of dark matches.
The Next Big Thing (2002–2003)
On the March 18, 2002, episode of Raw, Lesnar made his debut on WWF television as a heel, attacking Al Snow, Maven, and Spike Dudley during their WWF Hardcore Championship battle.
Lesnar was also joined by Paul Heyman, who was seen giving Lesnar orders. Lesnar was assigned to the Raw brand when the WWF launched the brand extension.
Lesnar was dubbed “The Next Big Thing” by Heyman, who was later revealed to be his agent. The Hardy Boyz and Lesnar had their first conflict.
He won his first ever officially televised match against Jeff Hardy via knockout on April 21 at Backlash after Hardy refused to answer referee Theodore Long’s questions.
The following night, Lesnar defeated Matt Hardy, Jeff’s brother, in a similar manner. Shawn Stasiak was pinned during Lesnar and Shawn Stasiak’s loss against The Hardy Boyz at Insurrextion on May 4, but Lesnar then attacked every competitor.
The Hardy Boyz were defeated by Lesnar and Heyman on May 19 at Judgment Day. Additionally, this was the first pay-per-view event following the WWF’s rebranding as World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).
Lesnar won his second WWE Championship by defeating Angle at WrestleMania on March 30. During the bout, he botched a shooting star press (a technique he had frequently used in OVW) and fell on his head and neck, suffering a concussion.
Due to this, Angle (who had a broken neck when the event began) and Lesnar were forced to improvise the match’s conclusion.
WWE Champion (2003–2004)
After WrestleMania, Lesnar focused on John Cena, who had come back from injury in February 2003 following an F-5 from Lesnar into a ring post.
Cena claimed that Lesnar almost put an end to his career and even titled his new finishing move the “F.U.” as a dig at the new champion.
The feud came to a climax in a match on April 27 at Backlash, where Lesnar triumphed over Cena to keep the WWE Championship.
According to the plot, after Big Show wounded Rey Mysterio during their fight at Backlash, Lesnar and Big Show restarted their feud on the following week of SmackDown! After being attacked by Big Show, Mysterio was carried out on a stretcher with a backboard.
The Big Show then removed Mysterio from the stretcher and furthered the injury by swinging the backboard into the ring post.
When Big Show insisted that Lesnar defend his championship against him, Lesnar called Big Show out. As a result, Lesnar won a stretcher match for the WWE Championship on May 18 at Judgment Day.
Feud with Goldberg and departure (2003–2004)
Lesnar first met Goldberg of the Raw brand at the Survivor Series in November 2003. During a backstage interview, Lesnar asserted that he could defeat anyone in the world.
Goldberg interrupted the conversation and introduced himself to Lesnar, shaking hands with him before snatching him up with a staredown. Following this conflict, Lesnar got into a fight with Hardcore Holly.
In the plot, Holly sought retribution from Lesnar for legitimately hurting his neck during their previous match in 2002, which required neck surgery and kept Holly out of action for a year.
Lesnar defeated Holly in the Royal Rumble on January 25, 2004, to keep the WWE Championship.
Later in the Royal Rumble match, Lesnar gave Goldberg an F-5. This lets Kurt Angle get rid of him by throwing him over the top rope.
So, the crowd at Madison Square Garden booed and heckled Lesnar and Goldberg loudly the whole time they were fighting.
After a jackhammer, Goldberg overcame Lesnar, and Austin then gave both men Stone Cold Stunners to finish them out.
Japanese promotions (2005–2007)
At a New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) event in the Tokyo Dome on October 8, 2005, Lesnar defeated Kazuyuki Fujita and Masahiro Chono in a three-way match to win the IWGP Heavyweight Championship on his debut.
One of the few American wrestlers who have held this belt is Lesnar. Because WWE owns the F-5 moniker, he nicknamed the F-5, which he used to pin Chono the Verdict and win the match. After the match, Lesnar claimed that this name was a reference to his legal battle with WWE.
On December 6, WWE requested a temporary restraining order to stop Lesnar from working with NJPW. However, the court denied their request. After that, he defeated Yuji Nagata and Manabu Nakanishi in two matches without a championship.
On January 4, 2006, Lesnar defeated the previous champion, Shinsuke Nakamura, in a successful title defense.
When Lesnar went on to defend the IWGP Heavyweight Championship against former Sumo Wrestling Grand Champion Akebono on March 19 at the Sumo Hall, WWE once more sought an injunction against him on January 13. This time, the injunction was not enforced.
On May 3, Lesnar defeated Giant Bernard and successfully defended his championship. This was the first American versus American title fight in NJPW since Vader vs. Stan Hansen in 1990.
Lesnar was stripped of the IWGP Heavyweight Championship by NJPW on July 15 because he was unable to defend it because of visa complications.
On July 16, a competition was organized to crown a new champion, and Hiroshi Tanahashi emerged victorious.
Until the end of June 2007, Lesnar kept the IWGP Heavyweight Championship belt in his possession physically.
On June 29, 2007, over a year later, at the Inoki Genome Federation’s inaugural event, Lesnar faced off against TNA World Heavyweight Champion Kurt Angle to defend his IWGP Heavyweight Championship (IGF).
Because he wasn’t defeated for the championship, IGF promoter Antonio Inoki said Lesnar was the “legitimate” IWGP Heavyweight Champion.
IGF and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling recognized Angle’s victory as the IWGP Heavyweight Championship when he forced him to submit to an ankle lock (TNA).
From this match until 2012, when he re-signed with WWE, Lesnar did not compete as a professional wrestler.
