The Early Years

Gustav Otto and Karl Rapp are the founding fathers of the BMW company. In 1916, their independent vehicle manufacturing businesses united. This was succeeded by the Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG (BFW).

This company assumed the construction responsibilities of Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW) in 1922. This indicates that BFW shifted its services to the new company, BMW.

This is why 1916 is regarded as the manufacturer’s founding year, despite the fact that the name and logo would not be finalized until a few years later.

The firm created inboard engines during World War I. In 1920, the production of engines was shifted to a new investor named Castiglioni. He transferred BMW to Munich, which remains the company’s headquarters to this day.

BMW produced its first motorcycle shortly after. This was a momentous occasion for the company, as it was the first time it produced more than engines. BMW designed and built this motorcycle from the ground up.

During the War

Germany’s transition to National Socialism between the world wars affected many industries, including vehicle manufacturing. BMW began to specialize in weapons and aircraft engines. They continued to manufacture vehicles on a smaller scale.

As demand for armaments increased, BMW shifted its focus to aircraft building (on government orders). This resulted in new firm mergers, which greatly increased the manufacturer’s size in the late 1930s.

By 1941, the Munich facility was the German military’s main source of planes because the government had given it a lot of money.

History in the Modern Era

After the war, the Allies demolished a number of BMW’s factories. This depleted the company’s assets until 1948 when motorcycle manufacturing resumed. This was a slow moment for the business due to material constraints.

In 1952, the 6-passenger BMW 501 debuted on the market. It was not a tremendous financial success, but that was not necessary.

The concept of BMW manufacturing enormous luxury automobiles successfully propelled the firm into the current era. This culminated in 1961 with the BMW 1500, a mid-range car that put BMW on the map.

Since then, BMW has expanded production facilities to keep up with demand. Today, only a few companies can claim a comparable reputation for luxury consumer-class automobiles.

The Takeaway

BMW’s turbulent history began in Germany on the eve of the World Wars. However, it survived due to its military contracts, was stripped down after the war, and gradually rebuilt itself as a maker of luxury consumer vehicles.

BMW is today synonymous with high-quality, opulently appointed, and elegantly styled big sedans.
